You may request a certified copy of a birth certificate if you are: - The person named on the certificate (if you are at least 18 years old), - The parent(s) named on the birth certificate, or - The legal guardian, or a legal representative of one of the above.

I was checking hints for one of my ancestors when I came across something I didn’t expect: a hint for a relative’s South Carolina birth certificate. South Carolina did not start issuing birth certificates statewide until 1915, and those are not publicly available until 100 years later.

Birth Certificates are available from the Vital Records Division of the SC Department of Public Health (SC DPH). The SC DPH website provides information on the Vital Records it manages and how to obtain a certified copy of a birth certificate.The local DHEC office, located at 222 Beaufort St NE, Aiken, provides copies of birth and death certificates.
